CARE INSTRUCTIONS
Your Texas Butcher Block arrived infused with food grade mineral oil to the saturation point. It has absorbed all the oil that it will take. It also has a coat of board butter, the same butter included in the package, which acts as a sealer and conditioner. The board butter is a combination of food grade mineral oil and food grade beeswax. I ship these boards without wiping off the excess butter. When it arrives, simply wipe off the excess with a dry cloth or paper towel and you’re ready to put it to work.
Clean your new board the same as you clean your kitchen counter tops. Detergent will not hurt it but be sure it is thoroughly rinsed as a soap residue can cause abdominal distress the same as if your dishes were not thoroughly rinsed. Do not use abrasive type cleansers.
When you wash and rinse your board, excess water should be wiped off to dry as much as possible. Once all water residual water has evaporated, it may appear dry. Do not apply board butter right away. Let it sit overnight. Since the board is infused with mineral oil, through the miracle of osmosis, it will likely look re-conditioned by morning. If it still appears dry, apply board butter with your fingers. I like to spread it around with my fingers and then work it in with the heel of my hand. Your body heat will help it spread more easily. Let the board sit overnight and wipe off the excess in the morning.
Straight mineral oil (not included) may also be used for conditioning your board. Ensure it is food grade mineral oil, apply liberally (to the point of ponding) and let sit overnight. Wipe off excess (if it hasn’t all been absorbed) in the morning.
Knives with a fine edge blade are best for use on your new Texas Butcher Block. Knives with serrated blades will tend to abrade the cutting surface.
With this little bit of simple, quick maintenance your board will give you a lifetime of service.
